This workflow can be used to carry a structural steel model designed in RAM Structural System (RAM SS) into Revit Structure in order to carry your structural system into a Revit Model. Any changes made to the structure within Revit can then be transferred back to RAM SS. The updated model can be transferred back to RAM SS using the workflow outlined on the Revit to RAM Workflow.
In order to perform the RAM Structural System to Revit Structure transfer you must first install the Bentley: Revit Structure Link.
Categories that will be Imported from RAM SS to Revit Structure:
Structural beams, columns, braces
Member Sizes
Member fixity
Column Orientation
Steel material properties of members
Member camber and stud information
Maximum beam reactions
Orthogonal and radial grid lines
Gravity point and line loads
Limitations and Suggestions for a Successful Import:
Slabs and Decks cannot be imported into Revit Structure from RAM SS. Slabs and Decks will have to be redesigned in Revit after the import.
Orthogonal and radial grids are only imported when importing a new model from RAM, not when updating an existing Revit model.
Gravity point, line and surface loads are only imported when importing a new model from RAM, not when updating an existing Revit model.
If the surface loads are drawn to the extreme edges of the building with the whole perimeter design option in RAM SS, the Loads will appear to be extended past the perimeter of the building in Revit Structure.
Step-by-Step Workflow
1. Ensure new sizes from the RAM redesign are loaded in Revit Structures by clicking “Structural Column,” on the right hand side of the screen, then “Load” from the menu bar, then open the “Structural” folder, then “Framing,” then “Steel.” Click “W-Wide Flange” and Select all the Columns that RAM has designed. 2.Repeat step 1 with Beams. 3.Click “Tools” from the menu bar, then “External Tools” and “Import Model from RAM.” 4.Click “OK” for the message. 5.Select desired file location. 6.Click “All” under “Log File Messages,” and “Update Existing Model.” 7.Click “Import.” 8.Click “Yes” to override existing version. 9.Your import is complete.
